If you eat lots of sugar or flour or high glycemic
fruit, or processed food, when your muscles are full of sugar, (sedentary) sugar
goes from your intestines, into your bloodstream and then can, since your liver
is usually full up with a days supply, spike to high levels. It has no where to
go.
Your kidneys will try to pee it out in self protection attempt. Your kidneys
will probably be abused and start to give up eventually, from over work. (some
figures claim over 60% of diabetics have hidden kidney damage)
However, during or after prolonged exercise, sugar goes from your intestines
into your bloodstream and then directly into your muscles, so it does not spike.
We refer to your muscles as the sugar dump. The only normal place your body
has to put or get rid of high sugar (other then convert it to fat or pee it out)
It is sugar peaks that cause you to put on weight and do body damage when you
are a diabetic (called complications) and it is what you are doing, when you are
learning to control your blood sugar, (your body has lost the ability to do it
automatically from years of too high sugar abuse) is to stop or subdue high
peaks.
For diabetics or overweight people, the safest time to eat foods that cause
a high rise in blood sugar is while they are exercising. (or just before or
just after)
The learned skill as a diabetic is to learn to eat and do whatever necessary
to never let blood sugar go above. 160.
Above that, this is called peaking...
Your finger prick test is to help you learn what causes your peaks (foods,
emotions, stress, lack of activity etc) and to learn what seems to work over
time to get it to stay below your target levels.
It is an expense and time consuming nuisance that does nothing for your
diabetes condition whatsoever.
It only helps if learning from it, and if you use and recognize it as your only
(rather sloppy accuracy) score card or source of any feed back of how successful
you are in "controlling your diabetes".
Sudden peaks can best be brought down by "hitting the bricks" as
they used to say to get exercise. This seems to be the only thing that seems to
work fast. Most everything else you do is an immediate disappointment since the
results from many supplements etc often take weeks to bring levels down.
Sugar peaks cause high insulin and it also does body damage as well as the
high blood sugar sticking up your circulation etc., making you much more likely
to not only nerve and other body damage but much more susceptible to strokes,
heart attacks etc.
You will then be listed as a "died of a heart attack" etc instead of
being listed as a victim of diabetes.
One of the chief hazards of high blood sugar is "nerve"
damage", and I see statistics that say up to 70% have some nerve
damage.
Most common is neuropathy, which means the nerves to body extremities (usually
feet) are affected. This is accumulative, over time....
What most do not realize is you can have nerve damage to your control of
digestion system (and many other bodily functions) and even nerves that control
your heart.
If this one progresses there is nothing any one can do for you.
Your body is likely producing insulin to try to control this peak, but over time
your producer, (pancreas) which due to higher and higher resistance to insulin
developing over time (as you aged) has had to produce many times the normal
insulin level in recent years, eventually tires out and drops off the level it
produces.
Now, as the disease progresses you will find it harder and harder or almost
imposable to keep your peaks down without supplementary insulin from outside.

This is why you need to over time keep close tabs because what is happening
keeps changing as diabetes progresses.
Keep in mind it PROGRESSES no matter what you do.
You just have to keep modifying your tactics to keep ahead of it.
The timing of eating (eat slow and often) (low glycemic food) is important as
the timing it with exercise and getting off your duff.
Regular A1c tests (ordered by your doctor and done at a lab) are necessary
now and then to see what the trend is. much more important then finger test.
Never let it get over 7.
Your basic goal as a diabetic with it "under control" is to not have
it go above 160. Work to keep A1C under 6.5. Never above 7.
Triglycerides are a concentrated form of blood fat energy carrier in your
blood stream.
Shoot for under 150 on lab tests
If higher, this is a sign of poorly controlled diabetes, low levels of
thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), liver or kidney disease.
We think you need a running record of your insulin level as you
do tests, testing for it every other test session at least.
We have done and will do more on why my research indicates it is very
important (and level to shoot for) for you to know and is the real villian in
doing damage to your body and your life.
This test level will tell you if your pancreas is quitting or starting to
shut down, or is it manufacturing many times normal insulin levels,
trying to overcome insulin resistance?
You should know this reading, for many reasons, one of which is to tell
what the trend is over time, (indication of whether your diabetes is progressing)
(getting worse) whether your doctor is interested or not.
Most Doctors will not order this test unless you insist.
