There are now considerable savings on a new price system started by Walmart and now joined by others such as Target that have decided to compete on the same generic low priced basis. Many prescriptions that were costing readers over $70 to fill are now a flat $4. Generics contain the same high quality active ingredients as their brand-name counterparts and are equally effective, but cost significantly less. Editors Note: Patents on brand name drugs expire after a certain number of years and can then be made and sold by others. (you may still be filling a prescription calling for the "brand name" at the original "exclusive" high price. You will need to ask your doctor to switch your prescription to the identical drug as a generic. The pharmacist will need that change in order to fill it with a generic version if your prescription is still on the "brand name" version. Walmart claims that 331 generic prescriptions are available for $4. for up to a 30-day supply at commonly prescribed dosages. Editors Note: Ten States Do not allow participation and in some states regulations may require "in person" pick up. To find out more in your state contact 1-800-WAL-MART, or go to www.walmart.com Target is offering the program in 9 states where Wal-Mart (38 states) is not yet offering its program: (per Nov. 06 release) California, Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. (Walmart is adding states on a regular basis so you may need to update with Walmart) Target says certain drugs may be higher in 10 states because of state laws. No Target pharmacies in North Dakota or Wyoming and no stores in Alaska, Hawaii or Vermont. According to www.rxlist.com, the Walmart list of generic drugs includes 14 of the top 20 prescribed medications in the United States. Editors Note: If your prescription is not on the generic list have the pharmacist at one of these participating firms contact your doctor and see if the current drug prescribed can not be switched to a low price generic that is on the $4 list. This can be done without you having to go back to your doctor for another visit.
The Price Difference Glucophage, I just called, Walgreen's, 500mg, 60 tablets, for twice a day, brand name, one months supply $56.99. It is my understanding that if the doctor prescribed "Glucophage" regardless of what the pharmacy tells you, that they are giving you the lowest price, they can not substitute a generic Metformin version unless the doctor specifically approves the change. This is why you have to ask either the doctor yourself to change your prescription or authorize the pharmacist to contact your doctor to ask for approval to change your prescription to the generic version, Metformin. Metformin, the generic version was $19.99. for 60 tablets when I asked, With your insurance paying $15.00 it would then cost you $5. This is why Walgreens are reported to be telling stockholders that they are not losing a lot of sales to Walmart and Target with the $4 price program, is because the customer is only saving $1 out of pocket with co-pay. It is obvious the insurance company is the one still taking the hit. The real beneficiary of the new program is the person with no co-pay, and likes the $4. much better then the $19.99. It is obvious many state legislatures have thrown road blocks, enacted for the states pharmacists lobby against lowering prices for drugs. The "must pick up in person", "no mail order" or "no on line" is an example of hampering restrictions. Many heavy prescription users that could greatly benefit are unable to "pick up' in person and would only be able to order online or by phone, which both restricted or banned methods would be more economical for Walmart of Target to handle and would enable them to lower prices.
