This is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register darkness. It is produced only during darkness and is one of the problems caused by modern man artificial light cutting darkness to an average of eight hours. This is also why using a night light is not recommended because this further interferes with this production. Also as we age it drops off at a continual rate so that by 50 you are making only a very small percentage of what was being produced at 20. Melatonin is there (among other reasons) to regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The lower amount of it produced often causes a problem of sleeping for older people. Supplementing Melatonin can hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills." This is an inexpensive, (less then 10 cents a day) supplement made of vegetable melatonin and has no side affects. (some comments say that it causes more dreaming) (this is usually an indicator of deeper sleep) 3 mg normal amount, some require less, but lasts only about six hours and your author has sworn by it for years and considers it essential. All part of compensating for natural glandular drop off, but finds it necessary sometimes to take an additional 3 mg after six hours sleep.. Many take Melatonin as an anti oxidant as well as aiding sleep. Take only with sleep planned. In tests on both rats and mice melatonin caused a significant 20% increase in their lifespan. Longevity improvement in humans is unknown, but melatonin is promoted in several full size books on the subject to reduce free radical damage; stimulate an aging immune system; protect the cardiovascular system; preserve a youthful circadian rhythm; and even stimulate the production of growth hormone. So if you have gotten older, this may help compensate for "fading hormone factors." Since we know we all have a rapid drop off in its production as we age, this seems an inexpensive way to help slow the process. Of all the supplements your author takes, if stopping supplements, this would be the last one to be dropped. If you have any trouble sleeping at all or often suffer jet lag on trips, pick up a bottle of this at any drug or health food store. As little as $3 or $4. As an anti aging supplement, I am a believer after reading extensively on the subject and using it for years. All those I have recommended it to have reported good results with it. If any member of the family has trouble sleeping, shut off all lights to help natural production and try this to supplement as needed. but take it on a regular basis.
