Instead of staying on this system you were designed for, your body has been flooded with sugar and in order to keep from drowning in it your entire operating system has been switched to a "burning sugar machine". As a sugar burning machine, when low on sugar you get emergency messages to eat, your sugar is low. Instead of running on fat as normal designed for, you burn only sugar, and flood in more. Fat burning is no longer part of the operating system. When sugar is flooded in and the demand is exceeded it has to be converted to fat. You never burn the fat because you are set as a sugar operating system and when need energy, your body DEMANDS you crave and eat MORE SUGAR. A sugar operating system means your brain chemicals are constantly up and down with the sugar level at the moment and you get moods of depression to elated highs that make you appear as a candidate for a mental hospital. You tie your self esteem and feelings to glucose levels. The switch from a sugar operating system to fat burning machine means there will be no more "sugar" highs. (You can still develop highs, we will tell you how later) Like the alcoholic, these "similar to alcohol" sugar highs you have been accustomed to on a daily basis, will be almost impossible to give up. To give up "sugar highs" will mean going thru severe withdrawal pain for most, depending on how sugar sensitive your body has become.We have to look at sugar (and starch flour) (using word sugar to cover both) for what it is. Both a man made "refined" substance, (mixed in food) a drug, not unlike or much different then cocaine. Both unnatural consumption, both have addicting highs, and both have disastrous side affects on the body. Sugar has been around so long (and flour) and so widely used they have become "socially acceptable" and considered by most societies as the "norm".
The Sugaroholic also accumulates over a long term, (often a life time) body damage, which includes but not limited to obesity, Cardio vascular problems and diabetes, from two substances the body was not designed or equipped to adequately handle. Both Users Are Told, Make Changes, Quit, Or Die Young. Getting off of sugar and flour will require going thru withdrawal symptoms just like alcohol or other substances. How severe they will be will vary by individual sensitivity to the substances. If may be relatively easy for some, and all but impossible for others. There is no "nicotine" patch, or "sugar patch" that will help. Some mistakenly think that all they have to do is find "sugar substitutes" or "artificial sweeteners". This is like telling the smoker, it will help if you take up and use "chewing tobacco" when you go off cigarettes. With the exception of Stevia, staying on real sugar is health food, compared to high fructose corn syrup or most other artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, sweet and low. or whatever the latest chemical is named. You need to get your body OFF the sugar operating system. You are getting back on the natural "FAT" burning system it was designed for. Sugar Sensitivity is a proven syndrome. Brain chemicals are involved, just as they are in alcoholism. You have likely become physiologically dependant on the effects of (sugar and starch) on your body. Solace in food, food as a reward. A sugar high, with two brain chemicals involved, serotonin and beta-endophine. There are many books on the subject of sugar and these chemicals effect on your body that can take you from the depths of depression to elated highs. The sugar blues, or moody blues, so to speak have been controlled by your glucose roller coaster and affects how you ran your life. Your body wants to run a natural balance, neither too low or too high. It can do that relatively easily if it can be switched back to a fat burning operating system. This leveling of glucose "Mood Leveler" from this change is one of the huge side benefits many mention. The alcoholics have a support system and a 12 step proven program that works. No such national organization exists (it should) for Sugaroholics. There are many books on the subject and one author has a seven step plan, not exactly a program. Written for weight loss people, here is my similar list with modifications that will more likely work for diabetics.
You As The Diabetic, Has To Personally Make A Commitment To Yourself and Family Here is the easy usual way, will get you off the hook with your family. Go to the Doctor, get them to put you on heavy dozes of medication, cause you are still eating like you know you should not. Convince yourself everything is fine. You are right. Looks good, sounds good, but you are losing ten years. The doctor himself will tell you that, this diabetes is statistically going to cut ten years off your life. Accept that and follow the routine...you will be fine... Get used to the idea, tear ten yearly calendars off the wall and throw them in the garbage. That will help you visualize what you are doing. As an alcoholic, until you hit bottom and decide for yourself, really really, this absolutely no matter what, has to change...until then...no amount of encouragement, money, therapy or help is going to change a thing. Here like most, you are going the easy way and die early as an alcoholic, prematurely of liver disease etc and/or maybe in driving you will take others with you, hell, that's easy, anybody can go that, route. The diabetic can go happily eating that next Krispy Kreme as they bring in his "seeing eye dog" and wheel chair. Nope, a diabetic is no different, then the alcoholic. Until they are ready to make the hard change...you as a helper in the process are going to be frustrated as all get out. Nope, one more drink, one more week end bender is likely not going to kill you, all by itself. The heart breaking thing is you have pushed your body ever closer to the brink and you are acting like you think you are going to beat the system. Diabetic, no different making thick soup of their blood stream one more time with sugar and starch will help irreversibly kill their nerves to their feet, their heart (you only do this one once) or to their eyes, you do not get to choose, which, and nothing will undo the damage, once done. After all they have gotten away with it so far, right? My doctor says my medicine will fix it. No reasoning here, no looking at what actually happens, a lost cause, the diabetic either decides to pay the price and make changes or forget it. Like the smoker says okay. I will cut down to one pack a day. The diabetic is only going to have a coke and a Twinkie after lunch... or will not tell you and sneak one. No use harping after them, you are wasting your time, remember you are dealing with SUGAR addicts. So I write like the medical people talking to alcoholics...a 5% success rate...UNLESS the alcoholic himself decides irreversably (they will say that) (and often still go back). There is a formula for sugar holics to get off sugar just as their is a twelve step program to get off alcohol. This is not that paper, book or organization. I am merely telling you emphatically this is the hardest thing many have ever done, or will ever do in their life, the overcoming an addiction. Never intended to get into this, not my thing, success rate without the 12 step program for alcoholics is almost nil. Looking at diabetics, i see the same thing. I was to a funeral last week. At the basement snack at the church after the funeral. (they do that in the Midwest) I was appalled when two diabetics, (one who looked like a basketball with legs) (his wife looked like a volley ball with legs) (daughter was only 75% round, needed another 5 to ten years to become a more perfect circle) and a relatively slim guy I actually knew, (had worked for me years ago.) both ate multiple sandwiches (this was just an auxiliary snack) and at least two deserts each, that included large slices of cake with loads of frosting. I asked the more slender guy, as a diabetic how in the world do you do that, oh, he says, don't worry about it, I just will skip taking a reading tonight, and laughed, the big laugh. The relatives funeral was bad enough, this really ruined my day. Felt like somehow I am wasting my time, just as the person that deals with alcoholics, an absolute "no win". No solution I dig up will matter...most will not even finish reading it...nearly all who do will go right back to what they have always done. Life just would not be any good otherwise and I am making the "good life" last as long as I can. they will say... Some will make some little changes, so they do not have to feel guilty. Enough of that...now you know this requires a commitment. I can not do a thing in that regard for you.
