Well it finally happened. Newsweek itself reported that a Harvard Study shows you're adding Chocolate to your diet makes a difference in your life "expectancy". That it does not cause acne and a new study shows it actually "improves" skin conditions. They site another study confirming chocolate can actually be good for your heart. So now it is not just my lone voice in the wilderness telling you that Chocolate can do big things for you if you do it right.... the "longevity" research is from Harvard itself so now maybe you will start paying attention. Here is an article Quote: "Harvard researchers found that chocolate eaters actually lived a year longer than abstainers".
The article comes out against "Dutch chocolate", which is
what we have been recommending. If you're making hot chocolate, use cocoa powder that has not been "Dutch." The Dutch treatment destroys phytochemicals. We are well aware that "Dutch" chocolate like the Hershey’s Dark Chocolate, we recommend has diminished elements, but the "Dark Chocolate normally three times as high in the magic ingredients, is still well ahead of regular chocolate even after the Dutch process (as we understand it). The reason we go with this is "Diabetics Can Not Cover" the usual bitter taste of unsweetened chocolate by adding sugar. Second:, as you may have picked up by now, your body PH is very important to a diabetic. This is whether your body is acidic or leans to healthful alkaline. As you know it is almost impossible for viruses and bacteria and even cancer to get a hold in a body that is slightly alkaline.
Therefore encouraging you to go the chocolate route may put you over in the dangerously acidic if you are acidic on the heavy side already. The Dutch process "alkanizes" (helps change the acidic balance or effect of coco and using it over standard chocolate will make a difference). Third: it is made by Hershey, an established name you trust and will be much more likely continue to keep using. You do not want this to be a fad that you tire of and then stop doing it. This is a program you need to plan to be on the rest of your life, not until you get "tired of it".Fourth: It is inexpensive. I was paying $3.19 a can and going through one a week. Now the local grocer here jumped it to $4.00 but I had laid in a big supply. Still peanuts compared to some chemical prescription from down at the drug store that does a fraction as much and costs ten times the amount, plus has in almost all such an accompanying BAD side affect. Fifth: I recommend the Dutch processed Hershey "Dark Chocolate Coco powder" because it "works" for me. I have tried a lot of different versions of using what I call "Chocolate Therapy". I do this because it makes me feel much more alive, alert, opens up my thinking ability (considerably) (recommended for the kids taking tests) and has extended my "work day ability" by several hours... (Sore subject with the spouse) Now whether it works in extending a seven year life expectancy for a diabetic my age...check back in 8. If still writing....... you will know that part worked too... Here is another direct quote from the article..." researchers think the cocoa bean may improve blood flow and even reduce the formation of clots." Personally, I like the increased blood flow" and the reducing clots is a bonus. Actually, I am not really into figuring out how the Chocolate Therapy works. I got involved because every study has shown Chocolate increases your life expectancy by a huge difference. With that kind of record, many showing cutting deaths in half for participants, who cares how it does it as long as it had no side affects. Our trick is showing you how to do this without the coco fat, milk and sugar. (as was done in most studies) Remember, one study shows that adding milk almost nullifies the benefit.New readers are reminded we covered all this with "pages" in back issues. The article mentions that Mars (Hershey working on one) that has a line of new processing that ....."retains the flavanols. Its nutrients include folic acid and vitamins B-6, B-12, C and E."However, we have yet to find one of these that is not laden with Sugar and/or Milk etc and many have artificial sweeteners that do a diabetic more harm then sugar, but convince most that since it is almost "sugar free" you are in the clear. We see new studies on chocolate or some phase of it almost every day and will keep you informed.
A 2005 study from the American Heart Association suggests dark chocolate could even lower your blood pressure. The confection, rich in a type of flavonoids and flavonols (natural antioxidants), lowered the blood pressure of a small control group by 8 to 10 percent per person. The group also showed a decrease in insulin resistance and bad cholesterol levels. Suggested Reading, Harlan's Recipe's, click here
